Barnegat Light
General Information
Barnegat Light is a peaceful vacation spot with many fine seafood restaurants and small shops. It has a permanent population of about 675 which can increase to several thousand during the season.
The most prominent and famous landmark on Long Beach Island is the Barnegat Lighthouse. Called 'Old Barney' by many islanders and historians, the lighthouse sits at the northernmost tip of the island, fearfully close to the sea that lashes at its foundations.
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park has a picnic area and fishing areas, while the lighthouse tower is open to the public during the summer months. Steps have been taken to ensure that the tower will remain standing for many years, and additional jetties were built to prevent the beach erosion which has been a major problem. For information and hours of operation, call the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park at (609) 494-2016.
