Barnegat Township

Barnegat is a mainland town in Ocean County, New Jersey that is about 2 miles inland from Barnegat Bay. The township is North of Manahawkin and west of Barnegat Light, the northernmost community on Long Beach Island.



Barnegat Bay

The bay that separates the Northern end of Long Beach Island and Island Beach from mainland New Jersey.




Barnegat Inlet

The inlet that enters Barnegat Bay at the Northern end of Long Beach Island. The name is derived from the Dutch language and means "Inlet of the Breakers".



Beach Haven Inlet

The inlet leading into Little Egg Harbor Bay at the Southern end of Long Beach Island.




Cranberry Inlet

An inlet about 10 miles North of Long Beach Island that separated Island Beach and Squan Beach from 1750 to 1815. Named for the many cranberry bogs throughout the area, it provided access to Barnegat Bay near Toms River, New Jersey.



Edge Cove

A deep cove on the coast of New Jersey just East of Tuckerton. It served as the launching point for steamships that would ferry guests to Long Beach Island before the coming of the railroad.



Island Beach

The barrier island just North of Long Beach Island.





The Intercoastal Waterway

A string of barrier islands and other safe areas used as a route for ships traveling the East Coast of the United States. The islands and protected coves protect vessels from storms and rough seas.



Little Egg Harbor Bay

The bay separating the southern part of Long Beach Island from the New Jersey coastline. Early Dutch explorers found many nests filled with the eggs of seabirds in the area, so the area was called Eyren Haven or Harbor of Eggs, and to this day, Little Egg Harbor and Little Egg Harbor Bay retain the title.



Long Beach Island

An 18 mile long barrier island that lies off the coast of New Jersey. With Barnegat Inlet to the North and Beach Haven Inlet to the South, It sits about midway between the northernmost and southernmost points of the Jersey coast.



Manahawkin, New Jersey

A town on mainland New Jersey. It is opposite the borough of Ship Bottom on Long Beach Island. The causeway that provides automobile access to the island crosses the bay from Manahawkin.



Squan Beach

The Northern part of Island Beach.
It was a separate island from 1750 to 1815.




Toms River, New Jersey

A town on mainland New Jersey about 20 miles North of Manahawkin.




Tuckerton, New Jersey

A town two miles inland from Little Egg Harbor Bay across from the southern end of Long Beach Island.
