A Volunteer Chorus of Men and
Women
in Southern Ocean
County
Founded in 1972
A typical concert by The Island Singers would include anything from Broadway
show tunes,
popular song standards, and spirituals, to light classical pieces,
madrigals,
Christmas carols and other Holiday favorites.
Every Year the Island Singers make pro-bono appearances, at such events
as the Southern Ocean County Hospital's holiday tree-lighting ceremony and
caroling for the patients in the hospital. They also have provided
musical entertainment for the annual "Neighbors in Need" in-gathering of
donations on Long Beach Island.
Professional Leadership
The Island Singers have been under the professional direction of Polly Moore since 1986. Polly received her musical training at Westminster Choir College and has participated in the Garden State Symphony Chorus and the New Jersey Chamber Singers. She holds a Bachelor's Degree from Georgian Cout College and gives private voice lessons.
Social Events Are Part of the Activities
In addition to sharing a love for music by participating in singing, the Island Singers enjoy a cordial relationship with one another. The fellowship extends from the weekly rehearsals and the concerts to several parties that are held during the year for chorus members, their spouses and friends.
Members from Diverse Backgrounds
Chorus members are non-paid volunteers ranging in age from 17 to 80. Although many have had extensive singing experience, the Island Singers welcome anyone with a pleasant voice and a desire to learn to sing choral music. (There is no formal audition.)
Opportunities for Musical Development
Weekly rehearsals are held locally every Tuesday evening, with the exception of January, July, and August. The rehearsals include 20 minutes of musical training and vocal exercises in order to help everyone, especially newcomers, develop the necessary skills for choral singing.
Let the Island Singers Entertain Your Organization
Community organizations, social clubs, civic groups and similar organizations are encouraged to have the Island singers entertain at their functions. Programs can be tailored to the needs of the individual event with regard to length of performance and musical content. Groups interested should contact Island Singers at (609) 698--4761 or at the postal or E-Mail address shown below.
